ASK YOUR QUESTION HERE

What what do you do on your first day in year 7?

This is one of those questions that depends on which school you are going to. However, most schools will have Year 7's start their day before the other year groups. Many of you will find you start with an assembly all together or extended time in your form group. Quite a few of the schools in this area also use a buddy system for the first couple of weeks meaning you get a pupil from another year group helping you get from class to class and joining you in form time. There is not much else to say, I wish I could say there was a big welcoming party but I think you will find that you will start lessons as normal. Here are 5 tips on getting through your first day:

  1. Work out how to use your planner: Find out where you write homework and what needs to be in it. If your school allows then customise it (at home!) Finally colour code your timetable; if you don't want to do it all then at least make sure you mark the days that are PE & Food Tech so that you remember to take equipment with you - however I love a fully colour coded timetable the best!

  2. Get to know your teachers: you won't meet them all on the first day but for the ones you do, find out what they like to be called and what standards of behaviour they expect from you. It's easy to believe other peoples opinions on teachers - but you would hate it if they had already formed an opinion on you based on what others said! Go in and decide for yourself! Remember they are human too! If they set homework - get it done!

  3. Talk to people: you may not have a best friend by the end of day one, but choose to smile and talk to people. Remember most people like to talk about themselves so think of some questions you could ask to start conversation. Try and say hello to the person you end up sitting next to. If you are someone who finds it easy to start conversations, make sure you look out for the people who are finding it harder and get them to join you!

  4. Use lunch well: First of all eat lunch! There is so much more choice at secondary school of what you can eat - make sure you eat well to fuel your brain for the next hour(s) of school. Keep your water bottle topped up and make sure you have drunk at least one bottle by lunchtime. Go to the toilet! Another thing you can do at lunch is look and see if any clubs are running where you could meet like minded people. We run a Tuesday lunch club in The Archbishop's School called Blaze, you'll find us in room MA2, and we'd love to see you!

  5. Talk at home: make sure you stay in communication with your parents or carers with what is going on at school. Try and think of 1-3 positive things that happen each day that you can be thankful for, but make sure you also talk about the things that are worrying you.

If you feel that there is no one at home you can talk to you can ring or            visit Childline  on 0800 1111 or visit Kooth. We also have mentors in            The Archbishop's School, Barton Manor & Canterbury Academy if you            would like to talk to someone face to face

answers

How can I find out more about my new school before I start? What if I need to know something?

There are a few options here... your new school WILL have a website and many have a section for starting at the school...check it out!

For any specific queries, maybe ask your adults to email the school, and check with your current class teacher, if they don't know the answer, they will have the contacts to be able to find out for you!
